In spring 2025, Open Nations, with the support of EEA and Norway Grants, launched a new series of rehabilitation camps in Lithuania “Family as a Pillar”. Designed for Ukrainian families directly affected by war — including widows, children, families of prisoners of war, displaced persons, and educators — the initiative aimed to restore emotional resilience, rebuild community ties, and support family unity in times of unprecedented adversity.
Responding to Urgent Needs
The interest in the program far exceeded its initial capacity: within the first three days of applications, we received over 1,700 submissions — representing more than 4,250 individuals — for just 180 places across three retreats. The majority of applicants were:
Given the unique emotional toll on educators working under the constant threat of war, one of the 2025 camps was dedicated specifically to school communities, acknowledging their critical role in fostering emotional stability and resilience among children and youth.
- Widows with children (approx. 40%)
- Wives of prisoners of war
- Teachers, caregivers, and social workers
A Three-Level Approach to Healing
The “Family as a Pillar” program works across three interconnected levels:
Individual Level
Adults and children participated in age-appropriate sessions focused on emotional healing, physical and psychological recovery, and rediscovering meaning and motivation in life after trauma.
Family Level
Workshops and guided conversations helped strengthen bonds between couples, parents and children, teenagers and adults, and across generations. We view parenting as a vital resource, striving to make the family a source of safety, trust, and support.
Community Level
Families from different regions and with diverse war experiences came together to share stories, rediscover connection, and form new support networks — even amidst grief and loss.
Meaningful Impact: Before and After
A detailed assessment conducted among 65 participants showed a profound emotional transformation:
- Emotional state improvement: 97% reported significantly better emotional well-being after the retreat.
- Stress reduction: Marked decreases in stress, anxiety, insomnia, emotional instability, and feelings of helplessness.
- Improved relationships: Over 92% experienced stronger emotional connections within their families and a deeper sense of community belonging.
Participant Feedback
✅ “I regained hope.”
✅ “I felt heard and not alone.”
✅ “For the first time in months, I saw my child smile freely.”
Across six key outcomes, including emotional support, sense of belonging, and reduction of isolation, over 90% of participants gave positive feedback — confirming the program’s success in fostering healing, resilience, and reconnection.
A Space to Rebuild and Reconnect
Through storytelling, group discussions, stress-relief practices, parenting workshops, and cultural evenings around the fire, families found a space for renewal — emotionally, relationally, and socially.
We believe programs like “Family as a Pillar” are not only necessary, but essential. They lay the groundwork for rebuilding a stronger, more connected society — one family at a time.
